Course Overview:
The NRSWA Unit LA - Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus course is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively locate and avoid underground utility apparatus. This training is crucial for anyone involved in excavation or groundwork, ensuring compliance with industry standards and promoting safety on-site.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the legal and safety implications of underground utility work.
- Gain proficiency in using equipment and techniques for detecting and avoiding underground apparatus.
- Learn how to interpret utility plans and drawings accurately.
- Develop practical skills in the use of cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators (GENNY).
- Enhance awareness of potential hazards and the importance of safe working practices.
- Adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in HSG47 – "Avoiding danger from underground services".

Legislation and Regulations:
- Overview of relevant legislation including the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA).
- Understanding the legal responsibilities and requirements for safe excavation.

- Interpreting and understanding utility plans.
- Identifying and marking underground utilities before excavation.

- Use of cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators (GENNY).
- Practical demonstrations and hands-on practice.

- Identifying potential hazards associated with underground utilities.
- Implementing best practices to avoid accidents and damage.
- Following the HSE HSG47 guidelines to ensure safety and compliance.

- Real-world scenarios to practice locating and avoiding underground apparatus.
- Assessment of competency through practical tests in accordance with the Highway Authorities and Utilities Committee (HAUC) specifications.
Certification: From CABWI.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certification recognizing their competence in the location and avoidance of underground apparatus, meeting the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), HSE HSG47 guidelines, and HAUC specifications.
Duration:
The course duration is 1.5 days, comprising theoretical instruction and practical exercises. The assessment will take place after all the training has been completed.
