NRSWA Supervisor/Operative 5 Day Course
Designed specifically for supervisors, this comprehensive 5-day course covers both the theoretical and practical requirements necessary to comply with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA). Participants will gain the essential skills and knowledge to work safely and effectively in street works environments. The course includes hands-on training in locating and avoiding underground utilities, safe excavation practices, and proper backfilling and reinstatement techniques for various surface types, including modular, flexible, composite, and concrete surfaces.
Who Attends
The NRSW course is designed to assess and qualify experienced operatives (please note this course is for supervisors only, operative availability can be found under NRSWA 5 Days - operative course).
Course Content
Participants will cover the following modules:
NRSWA LA - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (Unit 1)
NRSWA S1 - Monitoring signing, Lighting and Guarding (Unit 10)
NRSWA S2 - Monitoring Excavation in the Highway (Unit 11)
NRSWA S3 - Monitoring Reinstatement of Backfill Materials (Unit 12)
NRSWA S4 - Monitoring Reinstatement of Sub-Base and Base in Non Bituminous Materials (Unit 13)
NRSWA S5 - Monitoring Reinstatement in Bituminous Materials (Unit 14)
NRSWA S7 - Monitoring Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways (Unit 16)
NRSWA (O8) - Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways: Understand the processes involved in restoring modular and concrete surfaces.
Assessment Methods
Delegates will be continuously assessed during the NRSWA course in preparation for tablet based examinations, one exam for each unit.
Prerequisites
None: This course is open to all supervisors with no prior qualifications required. The minimum entry requirement is a good understanding of spoken and written English. Only those with experience should attend, this is an assessment or test.
Duration
5 Days: Intensive training to ensure comprehensive understanding and practical competence.
Certification
Upon successful completion, delegates will receive:
CABWI Certificate: Documenting the modules completed.
Initial Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) Card: Recognized certification for street works operatives. CABWI Cert & SWQR Card Included in cost (valid 5 years).

SA006 COURSE DETAILS
This accreditation ensures that individuals working in the civils aspects of network construction and maintenance are suitably trained and understand the dangers of working in this environment. This accreditation is particularly aimed at those individuals who undertake work within the telecoms industry. This accreditation does not qualify an individual to enter a confined space.
The course covers 3 modules:
- Safe Working In Civils
- Gas Testing
- Cover Lifting
The course will cover:-
Know relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice when working in a civils works environment
Know the principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work.
Know the importance of safe manual handling in the workplace.
Know how to avoid dangers of underground services
Know the importance of working in a confined space
Know the importance of working safely at height in the workplace.
Know the importance of working around plant, tools and equipment safely
Understand how to interpret utility drawings and maintain accurate information to ensure a safe and secure working environment
Know risks to health when working on-site
Know how to maintain a safe and secure working environment
Be able to work safely
Be able to carry out gas testing safely
Be able to demonstrate safe methods of testing for lifting covers before working underground
Know the hazards of working in underground chambers or structures
Know how to carry out cover lifting safely
SA002 COURSE DETAILS
Underground Safety is a qualification from Smart Awards. The course provides candidates with essential knowledge and understanding of how to identify hazards and risks when working safely on or near the underground network. Please note that the SA002 qualification does not qualify an individual to enter a confined space.
The course covers 2 modules:
- Gas testing
- Cover lifting
Candidates will learn about the different types of gases that can be found underground, how to test for them, and the correct procedures to follow if gas is found. They will also learn about the different types of underground covers, how to lift them safely, and the hazards associated with working in the underground network. The SA002 qualification is aimed at anyone who works within the external underground telecoms network, such as telecommunications engineers, cablers, network assessors and surveyors. The SA002 qualification is valid for three years. After this time, learners must complete a refresher course to maintain their qualification. Please note that the SA002 qualification does not qualify an individual to enter a confined space.
